In college, I created a new category of hippie comedy called Kind Comedy. The number one rule in Kind Comedy is that every thing is “kind” and if something is not kind, then it is “unkind”. During the late 90′s my friend Dewey Tucker and I took Kind Comedy to the next level by performing it whenever possible and spreading it to our college friends. At it’s peak, Dewey and I would be at parties and strangers would come up to us dancing like hippies and using the word “kind”.
In early 2012, Dewey and I decided to package Kind Comedy for the masses and we created a three episode comedy series called WKND Asheville. WKND Asheville is a mock hippie radio show that is like Wayne’s World meets Cheech and Chong. Dewey and I co-wrote the shows and I produced them. Dewey also performed as the WKND character Nug. Nug is a right on kind brother that hosts the radio show. I played Nug’s cosmic co-host Earth Being.
In “Episode 1 (Where they keep it Kind)” and “Episode 2 (Exit the Duzsh)”, Nug and Earth Being host from WKND’s Studio Room 420 and give their opinions on hot hippie topics. Earth Being’s responses usually reflect the views of Nug or are slightly off topic. When Earth Being is off, and because they are in the same room, Nug pushes the show forward and steers Earth Being back on track.
For “Episode 3 (Dank Fest 2012)” we flipped WKND’s character dynamics upside down by having Earth Being report on location from, the local hippie musical festival, Dank Fest 2012. The Dank Fest 2012 location gave us the opportunity to expand on Nug and Earth Being’s hippie lifestyle and the WKND world by creating mock bands and festival activities. With Earth Being reporting from Dank Fest 2012 (and on drugs) will Nug be able to keep the show afloat? To find out, play the video below.
